Animals - Stray Dogs and Cats
There is a crazy amount of stray dogs wandering around the town and villages. Sometimes people feed them but often they fend for themselves on whatever they find including discarded fish and rubbish.
The areas around the waterfront are not safe at night for people because the dogs stay there at night and will defend their territory. The dogs can be heard fighting. They are less of a problem during the day unless formed into a pack.
There appears to be less cats just wandering around. They stake their territory where they catch rats and mice and also scrounge whatever food they can. Humans may also be feeding them such as those encountered at the North Tarawa resort.
The cats and dogs that I have seen are carrying high flea loads and there is some evidence of inbreeding in both the cats and dogs.
