North Tarawa

Over the first weekend we travelled by boat across the lagoon to North Tarawa to a resort. North Tarawa is less densely populated and more rural.

Highlights include the drive out to the tip of the island through some of the traditional villages. Each village although basic huts there are signs of solar panels and even cell phone coverage.

A demonstration of traditional weaving and coconut preparation was followed by a welcome to country ceremony by elders and traditional dancers. Then a selection of local food which was much appreciated.

In order to return by boat the following day we had to wait for the tide which was an interesting phenomena to watch how far out the water goes and how fast the shallows filled and how beautiful the blue water looks. The shallows are very rough with coral and not easy to walk on with bare feet. I am glad that I packed some marine shoes.
