Sanitation
Clean and flushing toilets are a luxury here. There is awareness from the government that this is an issue and there is a big Sanitation project underway.
Clean drinking water is also a big problem. The bulk of water is rainwater or imported bottled water combined with desalination plant osmosis refined water at refilling machines. Rainwater is useful for washing and toilet flushing but needs to be well boiled before drinking.Bottled water is expensive and creates an enormous amount of plastic waste that is very visible in some areas and beaches.
Desalination water is cheaper but only available in major built up areas. Suitable containers to refill are required usually older prepurchsed bottles are reused.
Water trucks are used on the island to deliver to those who have no adequate supply and for construction or where dust needs dampening.
